Autumn

One thing I am not a fan of is autumn. Because autumn means that it is almost winter. And I hate winter. In fact, the dread of the approaching winter is almost more unbearable than winter itself. Autumn for me is a like a big neon sign saying ‘Things are going to go downhill from here.’ No one likes that.

Yes, I stare wide-eyed at the changing colours and breathe ‘wow, isn’t it all so beautiful’ like everyone else. But inside my heart is sinking. I like heat. I like holidays. I like everything being beautiful, green and alive. I’m not a fan of everything getting all...dull. Brown. Dead.

So once March left me (which is excused from my autumn hatred by being my birthday month) I was less than impressed.

However, after some careful consideration, I have decided that this year is going to be different. I am going to love autumn like it was my own long-lost family member. Like it was my own mother god damn it.

And it hasn’t been as hard as I thought. As I have often said on this blog, google has the answer to everything. And so I googled ‘things to love about autumn’ and got pages and pages of reasons. After reading through them, how realised how fantastic this time of year could be if only I celebrated all of things wonderful things that it brought, rather than just the approaching winter.

And really, once I got my own list going, how could I do anything but love it?

Autumn means comfort foods, soups, lots of vegetables, ciders, tights, warm drinks around a fireside, cardigans, glorious scenes of red, orange and yellow, slippers, leaves to crunch in and crisp mornings.

And so in my first celebration of autumn I got my friend to help me collect a big pile of leaves to jump in. It was so much fun that I am going to get a bigger group together to do this again soon.

I have also decided to host an autumn get-together in two weekends (my apartment is too small to ever host a party) to celebrate all things autumn. And heck, maybe even celebrate the approaching winter. Maybe. There’s only so much positive that one girl has.

Autumn! I forgot you were across the globe. It's spring verging on summer here.I love it(autumn) because I can wear lots of layers but I'm a super cardigan nerd.

are you crazy?! autumn is awesome and canberra is so pretty at this time of year!

then again, it's a lot colder down your way compared to sydney so i can understand why you dread winter.

I love Autumn, as long as it comes with crisp sunny days and loads of beautiful orange colours :-)
I was so confused until the comment above made me realize that you are in Australia.

By obligation, I have to like this season because I am named after it. I prefer it in the south where I am from instead of Utah where we are living though- it turns cold too fast.

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year -- definitely work on embracing the season. Have a bonfire somewhere, pick some fruit, have a little adventure...

I remember one of my first proper dates with Arnold involving a big pile of leaves---and I suppose it was a sign because of combining two great loves of mine. I am a winter and an autumn lover (and I suppose I have to be: I grew up in Canada and in England and I got used to the snow)---I find beauty in the richness of the colours and the smokey, cosy haze of indoors. And for us---over here---it's a sign of Christmas soon approaching---so I suppose we have the upper hand in things to love about it.

It is so lovely to hear about your ever-growing positivity. You are such an inspiration.

it's so strange for me to see the month be may and hear you talk about fall. i associate that month with the beginning of warmth. but you will love it. autumn is one of my favorite seasons. it's true that nothing beats tights, changing leaves, cardigans and layers. enjoy it. :)

I agree. I only like fall because of the food and the leaves. Summer is approaching here, thank goodness it was a rough rough winter in NM. buy a cute coat and call it good :)

Great pictures! I want to come to your "end of Autumn" party! Except we are gearing up for summer here!

I'm convinced that parties are the only way to make it through winter alive--I live in Utah, so winter starts in October and ends in April or May (or so it seems---it snowed here last week...).

aw, I love autumn! it's my most favorite season. I totally missed it this year since I was in Peru during the U.S. fall, so I had to go straight to winter when I got back- no fun! I can't wait for next year's though :)

Aw. :) Spring and fall are my favorite seasons! It seems when I'm in spring it's my favorite and when it's autumn it's my favorite.

Fall.... Beautiful colors, crisp mornings, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, making piles of leaves to jump in, drinking hot cocoa with a special someone, hay wagon rides, and warm apple pie.... All sound like fall to me.

I hope this year you do find many things to love about autumn!

Google never ceases to amaze. Yes, well, the things you mentioned to like about Autumn are basically all the things I love about it, too. I'm not such a fan of Summer, despite Christmas and my birthday, because my house has no airconditioning and we sit at home all sweating blatantly while being nibbled by mozzies. It's a lot less than fun. Autumn, on the other hand, I like: There are balmy days and the sea is flat as glass and sparkling in the most beautiful way, and I can wear a comfy jumper and a scarf, but I don't have to wear socks and long pants, because it's not quite cold enough. And of course, you can begin to exploit the easier clime for hot chocolate and hot baths and the long pajamas. It's pretty good. I hate the cold, however, when I can't get any warmer, like I have all my clothes on and am still shivering. Then no one is having any fun. There is no action in the leaves where I am which is a shame. Best of luck for the cold. Take care.

I think I love the smell of autumn. Of rotting leaves and all that good stuff.

Guest Post: Brandi of ´Not Your Average Ordinary´

This guest post is quite exciting for me, as Brandi was actually the reason I first started my blog. She was one of my first followers and has been such an inspiration throughout this whole process. On top of that she is the sweetest person ever and such a beautiful woman inside and out. Without further ado, here she is: Ritual I was so flattered when Kaylia asked me to guest post for her. You see, she's one of my favorite sources of inspiration and honesty on the great big blogosphere. I was sipping tea, trying to decide what to write and feeling more unsure of myself than ever. It's been a bit like that lately in my world. When moments like those overwhelm me, I stop what I'm doing and brew a pot of tea. The first cup is reflection, the second poured becomes evaluation, the remaining cups devoted to action. It's one of the best things I do for myself all day, the little ritual. There’s something wonderful about daily rituals – those little times during the...

Guest post from Deidre of Decoybetty

Here is another guest post from a fabulous blogger; this time it's Deidre from Decoybetty. This blog is one of the funniest, most honest, most inspiring blog around (with the occasional dash of delicious recipes to boot). Check out her beautiful blog at www.decoybetty.com and you'll see why she is one of my all-time favourites. Guest post: When Kaylia asked me to write a guest post, I stared at the blank screen and the only things that came to mind is how every post that Kaylia writes, I read along going “Yes! Yes! Yes!”  This girl writes (albeit way more eloquently) what I’m thinking.  But you read her blog, you know how fabulous she is.   She recently wrote about the ‘anonymity’ of travel. I’m addicted to this feeling.  I’m an expat. I was born in America and got my first taste of Australia in the young adult book “Looking for Alibrandi” where a teenager skips school to hang out with a boy which is basically all the things I am not. I’d never skip school and I didn’t r...

Guest Post: Vanisha

Hey guys, here is the last guest post and I couldn't have picked someone better (if I do say so myself). I have only known Vanisha's blog for a short time but I'm already hooked. It's funny, honest and there are always beautiful photos to drool over. PLUS she lives in Canberra and does a much better job of summing up my awesome home-town than I do. Enjoy! Hello! I'm Vanisha from Vanisha's In Life...Australia  Kaylia invited me to write a guest post whilst she's on her fabulous holiday! Being asked to write a guest post almost feels like being invited into someone's home. I'm honored. Kaylia said write about "anything" so I thought I'd write about an amazing trip I recently took.  A lot of people find it odd that of all places, we decided to got to Timor Lestse. Let me preface this decision a little. It all started in front of this fire place in the middle of winter in the Kangaroo Valley. Two acquaintances sat. Trying to get war...
