why I will never give up coffee again

Two post in one day again? I'm becoming a bit of an addict...

As some of you may remember, I gave up coffee a while ago. But I had to give in today. It wasn’t the caffeine I missed. It wasn’t even the taste, or the smell. It was the experience. I missed it in the same way that I would miss birthday cake at a party, or mince pies and fruitcake at Christmas. I don’t much care for Christmas food and I hate cake, but eating these things makes me inexplicably happy.

Even just the smell of them causes wonderful memories to come flooding back. Because cake means happiness, laughter, celebration and love. Because Christmas food means family, board games, too much wine and Santa hats.

And my morning coffee to me means peace, relaxation, and some time to spend dreaming.

So I got up half an hour early this morning and made myself a cup. I let myself enjoy the smell of freshly brewed coffee as it filled our small, cosy kitchen. I smiled as I felt the warmth of the cup heat my hands, then trickle through my whole body.

I opened the curtains and let the sunshine pour through as I carried the cup to the table.

I sat back and enjoyed slowly sipping my coffee while I watched my kitten chase small dust particles floating in the sunlight, before she curled into a sleepy ball on the floor. I listened to my lover’s breath in the next room, and wrote sweet little messages to him on the frosted glass of our window. I enjoyed the sounds of the morning, the world awakening. I got out my gratitude journal and spent the next half an hour thinking of all of the wonderful things I have to be thankful for. And all of the wonderful things yet to come.

My heart has never felt so full as it did this morning.

yeah! I think sometimes, you just have to do what makes you happy. if drinking you coffee helps you get your happy on--- sip away. That is the same way, I feel about potatoes. I want to give them up but I love them, so I won't.

Sweet post about your first cup of coffee in the morning. Loved the post. I'm that way about hot tea.

I love the way you describe your feelings for coffee.

I feel much the same way as you described. For me, I'm not awake until I've had my coffee. It's not necessarily an addiction to caffeine, but my morning ritual that gets me going. I'm just not the same without it.

i'm exactly the same. i don't NEED coffee, caffeine does very little to me, but when i get to work i enjoy leaving my desk and going to the coffee shop with my colleagues and having a little chat and getting away from our desks and getting our coffee.
it's the same on the weekend, i just love sitting there with the paper enjoying time off. it's alllll about the process :)

have a great weekend!

Hmmmm....what kind of coffee did you say you were drinking? ;) Kidding!
I totally get it. Sometimes when you allow yourself these little pleasures, they lend to (and open the door to) other pleasures. The senses...one always compliments so many others. It sounds like an amazing morning!

I know this is completely not the main point of this post but something I got a little stuck on was this: you DON'T like CAKE?! ;)

But really, lovely lovely words. I really, really like the idea of a gratitude journal! Such a good point to keeping one. I'm glad you've put something you love back into your life---it is always such a good feeling. xx
Oooh, I'm the same way! I love the smell, color, the pleasure of drinking it. It used to be the same as cigarettes--not the nicotine, but the act itself (no more though!)

Oh, I love absolutely everything about coffee. The warmth it gives the mug, the taste, the nostalgia. I don't even know how you gave it up!

I don't drink coffee, so I feel like I can't relate.
How sad.
:(
But I do like chocolate.
Does that work?

I hate coffee. Despise the taste.

But all I want right now is a large cup of that black liquid and to gaze out of a window, embracing the day.

What have you done to me? ;)

I feel the same way about coffee! I don't necessarily love the taste or crave the caffeine, but it's part of my routine. I want nothing more than to sit and enjoy a cup before I start my day. You will even hear me anxiously saying on days when I haven't found the time to start my day with a cup, "OMG. I can't function. I haven't had my coffee today." Hmm... I guess it is an addiction... or a good excuse for a break :)
I'd agree - the experience of drinking coffee is almost as good as the smell and taste. People say to me, "I need a coffee" and then pour themself another cup of instant. Euw! I allow myself one really good cup of coffee a day and savour the moment. Bliss!

I love the smell of coffee! And i quite enjoy the ritual of other people making it - but caffeine makes me CRAZY.

That's how I feel about tea. If coffee makes you that happy, keep drinking it, though I'd say to let it be not too obsessively and frequently.

Hmm, yeah for me coffee isn't habit or addiction. I just reeeeally like the taste! mmmm.
Sounds like you had a really nice, relaxing morning! :o)

if it makes you feel as great as that, why should you give coffee up, right? ;)

oh yes! i couldn't agree more. sometimes it's coffee, sometimes tea, and sometimes chai lattes, but whatever the specific drink, i can't go a day without taking the time to sip something. the practice of slowing down with a soothing drink has become such a necessary part of my life now, and it's even better if i can take an afternoon to enjoy it out at a cafe.

i understand. there is peace in rituals.

have you considered decaf? or how about tea. the brewing of tea, or chai even better, is quite something special.

Guest Post: Brandi of ´Not Your Average Ordinary´

This guest post is quite exciting for me, as Brandi was actually the reason I first started my blog. She was one of my first followers and has been such an inspiration throughout this whole process. On top of that she is the sweetest person ever and such a beautiful woman inside and out. Without further ado, here she is: Ritual I was so flattered when Kaylia asked me to guest post for her. You see, she's one of my favorite sources of inspiration and honesty on the great big blogosphere. I was sipping tea, trying to decide what to write and feeling more unsure of myself than ever. It's been a bit like that lately in my world. When moments like those overwhelm me, I stop what I'm doing and brew a pot of tea. The first cup is reflection, the second poured becomes evaluation, the remaining cups devoted to action. It's one of the best things I do for myself all day, the little ritual. There’s something wonderful about daily rituals – those little times during the...

Guest post from Deidre of Decoybetty

Here is another guest post from a fabulous blogger; this time it's Deidre from Decoybetty. This blog is one of the funniest, most honest, most inspiring blog around (with the occasional dash of delicious recipes to boot). Check out her beautiful blog at www.decoybetty.com and you'll see why she is one of my all-time favourites. Guest post: When Kaylia asked me to write a guest post, I stared at the blank screen and the only things that came to mind is how every post that Kaylia writes, I read along going “Yes! Yes! Yes!”  This girl writes (albeit way more eloquently) what I’m thinking.  But you read her blog, you know how fabulous she is.   She recently wrote about the ‘anonymity’ of travel. I’m addicted to this feeling.  I’m an expat. I was born in America and got my first taste of Australia in the young adult book “Looking for Alibrandi” where a teenager skips school to hang out with a boy which is basically all the things I am not. I’d never skip school and I didn’t r...

Guest Post: Vanisha

Hey guys, here is the last guest post and I couldn't have picked someone better (if I do say so myself). I have only known Vanisha's blog for a short time but I'm already hooked. It's funny, honest and there are always beautiful photos to drool over. PLUS she lives in Canberra and does a much better job of summing up my awesome home-town than I do. Enjoy! Hello! I'm Vanisha from Vanisha's In Life...Australia  Kaylia invited me to write a guest post whilst she's on her fabulous holiday! Being asked to write a guest post almost feels like being invited into someone's home. I'm honored. Kaylia said write about "anything" so I thought I'd write about an amazing trip I recently took.  A lot of people find it odd that of all places, we decided to got to Timor Lestse. Let me preface this decision a little. It all started in front of this fire place in the middle of winter in the Kangaroo Valley. Two acquaintances sat. Trying to get war...
